To make sure that it is the VVT at fault, just unplug the VVT solenoid and see if the noise goes. If there is not noise, then it is 99.99% the VVT at fault. I have a spare second hand VVT atm moment if you are interested. I will check Volvo VADIS tonight to see what you need.

as gatos mentioned, if you lift the cover off the top of the engine underneath that you will see a selonoid near to the pulley (thats the one nearest to the front of the car)if you disconnect the wiring from this you will be able to tell if its the vvt, if no difference is found it may also be just the selonoid, you will be advised to replace timing belt and pulleys and tentioner as well, hope this is of help. ron.

I have just come back from Volvo with a wopper £790 to replace the VVT they say in the report its a Variable timing pully , I was wondering if anyone knows , how I can test it myself ? if I remove the Plug and the sound goes away , I have tried removing the sensor on the right hand side of the block , near the air filter ( not the MAF ) sensor but the one on the side of the engine , and the sound goes away , would this prove the valve needs to be only replaced , they quoted me a lot and this is not even replacing the belt for that its another £280 +

help please

£790 for a VVT replacement??? Are they having a laugh?

Have a look on a mini guide I made of how to check it theVVT pulley has failed: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...ighlight=guide

Or if you live anywhere near East London/Barking, feel free to drop by and I can check it

Wow £1100??

Drive to Scotland and get Parks Volvo to do the job for £300, buy your own belt for say £50 quid and get them to fit it at the same time (its no extra labour cost is it as they would be refitting the old one?) and spend the rest on staying in Scotland and enjoying its beauty for a weeks holiday!

Paid about £12 for 1l of brake fluid and did it myself.

They are having a laugh. Before you go ahead with them, try calling one of the other London Volvo dealers for a quote. Also if you live in East or North London, I would highly recommend you get a quote from Braydon Motors http://www.braydonmotors.co.uk/ . They are a big place and are specialised mainly in Volvos. But before you do any of these, try doing the quick test on my link and see if it is the actual VVT which is at fault.

Cost me £42 for a new timing belt and like you say it's removed anyway so no extra charges. £138 VVT Pulley and £162 Labour.
