I believe there are 2 variants of the keys. Old ones that are always on and then there the newer ones that go to sleep.

I did some research on this a while back.

I believe the normal keys are HUF8423MS which I have and

The ones that go to sleep have a different code. I will try and find it and update this post.

I could be wrong in my info but I remember very well there were 2 variants one having rsa which is an anti relay attack system. Aka sleeps when no motion.

Cool

I would assume the key would not sleep all the time it is within the keyless range. If outside of the keyless range then it would then sleep. When it is asleep I would assume the remote locking/unlocking still works (push the buttons). But as you say who knows? Volvo?

My keys Model: HUF8423 (do not sleep). You mention your keys are Model: HUF8423MS and they do no sleep either. Earlier in the thread someone mentioned having MS at the end of the serial number to identify the 'keys that sleep' but not sure if they were looking at the model number or serial number now. or do we have a way to know which keys are which?

I have just found this https://www.manualslib.com/manual/18...ms.html#manual
Volvo Standard Key with Motion SensorModel: HUF8423MS
"Relay-Station-Attack (RSA) countermeasure: when the key has been stationary without movement for adefined time (timer configurable), the motion sensor will deactivate the LF front end in the keyfob and thekey will not react to Keyless Entry or Start LF triggers from the vehicle. Only when motion has been de-tected by the implemented motion sensor, the LF front end of the keyfob will become active for a definedtime"
