rear seal, oil
had the rear seal done around 140 miles ago, now have an oil leak ive cleaned the flame trap pipes and nipple but have just noticed today that the rocker cover is again covered in oil even though its had a new seal, would this mean the the rear seal needs attention again?
thanks

Hi,
A rear seal leak would leak out the back of the engine onto the road. Have you have a new valve cover gasket fitted?

hi
sorry wasnt very clear......... its leaking from the back and dripping off the bracket underneath and gets worse if the cars been on a long drive, i think its because its more pressure? i took it back to the garage that fitted the rear seal and hes checked the flame trap and pipes etc, and has told me its the rear seal again

Have you done a compression test?

Get a compression tester from Halfords - not expensive.

I think we are muddling up different things here.
True, oil can leak out of the crankshaft rear oil seal and drip onto the road. Oil can also leak out of the rocker cover gasket, down the back of the engine, and onto the road. You need to establish which it is. If the rocker cover itself is oily then that can't be from either of the two sources above, and must be from a leaking washer on the oil filler cap. All these will be exacerbated by positive crankcase pressure, which might be because of a blocked breather system, or because of blow-by from worn pistons or bores. hence the suggestion for a compression test. You can get an idea whether compression is low just by trying to turn it over with a spanner on the crankshaft nut. It should be hard to get it over a compression, and want to spring back again if you release the spanner. If it turns easily with a wheezy hiss, then you have poor compression. But poor compression might be from leaking valves and nothing to do with bore wear. |
