...do I get the window winder handle off? I assumed it was like every other car I've had with manual windows: squeeze the door card in a bit and there's a spring pin you pop out and the handle slides off. But there's no movement whatsoever in the door card, so this option is ruled out and there's no other apparent way in.

Many thanks.

There is an Omega shaped clip on the handle, and there is a Volvo hook shaped tool that removes said clip effortlessly.

Without the tool you push the black plastic collar away from the handle and use something hard, sharp and pointy to dislodge the clip.

Putting the handle back is easy, fit clip to handle, push handle home......

Aaaaaaaah! So that's how you put them back on! I've been driving around with the door handle in the side pocket since I changed the winder chain a month or more ago because I couldn't figure out how I was supposed to: put the spring back in place, put the black collar over the spring, slide the handle over it all, and then somehow make room to get some home-made jimmy-rigged tool into the gap to get the omega clip back in...and then hear it disappear as it 'pinged' off across the driveway!

Job one tomorrow...fit by handles back on and start feeling like a proper car again! Thank you

Refitting is easy just fit the clip to the handle and then push it on and thats it, you will feel it click into place. I use a long thin screwdriver i bent the end over to make a hook to remove the clip, a couple of allen keys pushed in between handle and plastic collar on opposite sides give me room to work the clip off with the screwdriver. Works for me anyway

Sorry 940 didn't see you had said the same

Hmm, thanks folks. I'm fearing that, because the offending door has a non-matching handle, someone's put a handle on that's latched into place somehow without the aforementioned clip. A 'gentle' investigation may be required, but I don't want to knacker the door card.

The clip isn't easy to see, it is in a recess. It's been known to make grown men cry with fustration

This (expired) auction has what looks like a copy of the Volvo tool.

That may be the original, but as many, many cars were made like that, you can likely get a pair of thin, hooked "pliers" at a decent auto-supply store which will reach in there and get the job done. You might even still have the spring within a 5 foot radius after said operation! I have bought several, for under $10

A dremel and half a hack saw blade will make you one that will last a few years. You dont really need the bends. Grind the saw teeth off though. A strip of ali and a file will make something useable. How often are you going to use it?

"I used my granny's old crochet hook" Has been another comment.

As usual, after you figure out how to get the first one off, the other one is easy. I used some wood shims that were lying about to press the door card in against the spring and used a straight pick to press against the omega clip until enough of it stuck out to use a 'hooked' pick to pull it out.

I will attach a (blurry-sorry) picture of what the back of my handle and clip look like. This shows the omega clip partially 'pushed' out. Hope this helps.
