Default '04 v70 D5 CV joint differences?!

Hi guys,

Doing some work on my D5 and i have a damaged passenger side CV joint (Front left, short shaft). When looking for replacements the inner joint all seem to be the tripod, 3 bearing design, but the part i took off was a circular, 6 ball cage.

Anyone know what the deal is here? Does it have to be a circular design as in OEM? Or is the tripod design compatible? An example of the tripod joints being fitted is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGsy...yMechanicsKnow the A1autos guide for "How to Replace Driver's Side Axle 00-07 Volvo V70"

Don't judge me for the quality of the example!

Many thanks
Iain

First time I've seen that question.
There have been plenty of posts regarding the inferior quality of some replacement parts especially rebuilt axles. However, a change in CV design is news.
Would they work or what? vibrate more? I mean, if the shoe fits....
You might want to have your Volvo one rebuilt at a shaft shop and avoid the question entirely.

One thing I have learned is that the retaining ring used on some rebuilds is either too thick (sits too deeply into the groove thus impeding removal) or not beveled such that compression into the grove doesn't have a chance to start.

Also, I watched some of that parts site video and must've missed the part where they said their replacement product was of a different design.
You can't see the CV joint itself because it's covered by the boot.

Hi.
Don`t quote me on this but i think the ball -race was on early models and the tripod on later models. Possibly a difference between auto and manual as well.
Another way would be to take out the off- side and compare . Better to do the shafts as pairs anyway , same as you would tyres etc.
