Default Radar Blocked - 2014 XC70

Hi all, my new to me 2014 XC70 displays the message radar blocked after a few minutes of driving, every time I have used it.

Volvo read the fault codes, whilst it was in for the seat belt recall but nothing there. I have searched on here and found the weather can be an issue (what Volvo said), but I've used it in the dry and wet and the message always appears.

The seller suggests the radar needs to be recalibrated with VIDA, does this sound right?

I am booking into a local Volvo specialist to sort out the lack of power to the OS rear door and will ask them to look, but wanted to be better informed.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as right now this is reminding me of Discovery 4 ownership!

I have had this message but it is usually in cold and damp weather when the glass behind the mirror mists up soon after start up. It clears once the car has warmed up.

The next time it happens check the the screen from the outside to see if the clear sections on the screen behind the mirror is misted up? Al least then you will know if it is just a condensation problem.

Are the front carpets wet?, it could be that the front screen is leaking?

Thanks very much for the reply, much appreciated.

I hadn’t thought about the windscreen issue, but having just checked the mats and carpets are fine, but will definitely keep an eye on that, along with regular checks of the windscreen.

Thought the radar was in the front grill, the square lump on the driver side, on cars equipped with adaptive cruise?
Mine only throws a sulk in heavy rain, although it is an older car 2010 model year.

The radar is behind the plate in the grille. In front of the mirror you find the camera, laser scanner and rain detector.

My car is normally complaining about a covered radar only when it's snowing, and the snow clings to the radar dome.

I assumed it was the unit behind the grill as well, based on the diagram displayed with the error message, but my local Volvo dealer and the seller of the car both mentioned the sensors on the windscreen.

They can also be blocked, but the error message is different.

As others have said, I believe it is behind the grille. I only ever get the error in torrential rain or snow. Maybe there is some 'gunk' on the grille?

Thanks everyone, the grill is clear on the outside and having take. The grill off, it all seems fine behind and on the unit itself.

I shall get it booked into a specialist to take a look.

There could of course be something wrong with the radar itself, which doesn't show as anything but no echo from reasonable distance.

Snow sticking to the protective plate or torrential rain are the reasons I've had for it to be blocked. People who mount auxiliary headlights sometimes place them too high, so they block the radar.

The camera behind the windscreen I had some issues with, when Volvo replaced the windscreen (water ingress, due to bad bonding) and the new windscreen had broken heating wires in front of the camera. The glass fogged up when it got cold outside.
