Default High milage HPT.. am i mad? and tips for viewing car

I have came to a crossroads once again with 940's.

Our d24tic is at 280ish k and we have been offered through a friend the chance to purchase a 940 hpt with about 280k on. It has Everything extras wise, cruise, ac,elec leather etc. The car has full volvo service history and is claimed to be mint although i have only seen pictures so far. Its very tempting.

We both really wanted a 940 with a bit more get up and go so it really appeals to us been a hpt but the mileage scares me?

Apparently it uses very little oil and runs absolutely fine so what do other folk think? I have never had a petrol that high miles and did fancy 11psi at some point but suspect its off the cards without rebuild work at later date with that kinda miles. The owner really wants the car to be kept going and not scraped or broken for spares so i am keen.

Decisions decisions

Ohh and i am been warned and warned and warned about mpg. Are they really that bad haha?

Mick

I wouldnt worry too much about the miles if it's been well looked after. A good look at paperwork to see what's been done and you should be fine.

I broke an LPT recently with 230k and it ran perfectly. In fact it was probably smoother than my current LPT with 130k on it

The price would be an indicator of how mad you might be ?

Not mad, 'ukvolvo', just sensibly cautious.

Much depends on the price being asked. At a grand, I would say it was worth a look, at two, I would probably pass.

I don't know about the turbo variants, but I can tell you that I once put 58K on an N/A 2.3 Auto, taking it to 180K over four years, at an average of 29.0111 MPG. I guess it depends on how heavy your right foot is! Anyway, there is more to economical motoring than the price of fuel. Think of the huge depreciation hit that you would save - that will buy a lot of petrol, even at today's inflated prices.

As to the mileage; as 'griston64' said, 2 -300K is nothing unusual if they are correctly serviced. These are robust cars with few pitfalls. Carry out all the pre-purchase checks that you would do with any used car and you should be fine. If it is an auto, you might also usefully check for cross contamination of coolant and ATF in the expansion tank. It could herald the end of the road for the gearbox if not caught in time.

Regards, John.

I am quite keen to do my little tune on the drivetrain and see how much fuel saving can be had. I usually put top notch synthetics in everything and see a big difference in mpg and smoothness but reduction in engine braking.

Mick

I do alot of miles on motorway so this would suite testing mpg. The car is a m90 btw

I would say that's a bit much for 280k car tbh.

I would agree with John on his take a look at £1k

The M90 does make it more desireable still steep at £1.5k
