Default Quick Oil ?

Hi All,

I know this has topic has been discussed till the cows come home but I couldn't find anything in the previous threads.

I have a 2014 D4 S60 and I checked my oil last night and it said "low" with no marks on the gauge. I stuck 250ml in which is all I had left and checked it again at lunchtime at work (It had been sat for 5 hours and is 25 miles to work)

It now says "OK" and one mark from the top.... how can 250ml make it nearly full when it was on Low? does it err on the side of caution to ensure that the oil level is always topped up?

I'm hoping it wasn't actually full and I've added 250ml for no reason!

Normal. The gauge display reads either empty or full as a threshold is passed and so relatively tiny amounts of added oil will cause an apparently huge difference. The bar has only two positions!

When the system decides that oil needs adding then the message "add 0.5L" will be displayed on the dash.

These do often consume oil.

Ah Thanks Zebster, I did think this might be the case but wasn't sure, to be fair this is the only time I have had to top up since its service in February this year which I don't mind at all

I have an idea for a wonderful invention. How about creating a little hole and tube into the engine, through which you could push a stick that stops at a set position? You could then have marks at say “max” an “min”, allowing you to remove the stick and read exactly how much oil is in the sump.

Funnily enough I added one of these wonderful items to my 5 cylinder D4 engine!

It could be called a stick-dip!

Great idea though but not techy enough, wouldn't give trouble and far too accurate and easy to use!

I love sarcasm!

I'd go on Dragons Den with that one, what a great idea!

For those who really require super accurate oil level readings then the 'Car Scanner' app will access the engine oil level sensor to give level readings to millimetre accuracy.

I quite like the e-dipstick system. Having to use a physical dipstick on our Sportage is a grubby nuisance that makes me feel like I'm channelling Fred Dibnah.

Whilst I'm sure you're right, I remember the coming of the "paperless office ", as technology advanced. Decades later I've never been in one?
I'm a dinosaur, of course ,but if modern cars have taught me something I've always suspected, it is, just because you can, doesn't always mean you should!

Things that lessen inconvenience need to be 100% reliable before back up systems are abandoned.

Sensors and their foibles are all over this site. Oil is quite important
