Default Boot latch motor whirring

Hi

My 2007 S80 is so selfless, it just keeps on giving!

Now it’s my boot latch. Whenever I open the boot, as I raise the boot lid past a certain height, the electrical motor in the latch mechanism (I think) starts whirring, like it’s running constantly.

To be honest, that’s my best appraisal of the behaviour, I could be wrong, but this seems the logical explanation for this noise.

If I lower the boot lid a bit, the whirring noise stops. Then I raise the boot lid again and it doesn’t happen.

Has anyone had this issue before, and knows what the problem is please?

Thanks

I’m not aware of whirring, but the lock on my Dad’s V70 packed in & he had to get a used unit to solve the issue. A new locking mechanism was over £300 from Volvo, but maybe that’s because my Dad’s car has an electric tailgate.

Hallmark Volvo in Stockport may be worth a visit. I’d get their opinion on it first because changing the lock isn’t cheap. Even a used unit would be over £100, plus the labour to do it. A new locking mechanism for the S80 may not be as dear as a car with an electric boot, but I wouldn’t think they’d be cheap either.

It does sound as if the mechanism is struggling, so if you use your boot regularly, you’d be best getting it checked because it can just stop opening overnight literally.

I,Are you sure its not the Hydraulic arm just creaking? but if it works, dont fix it is the motto my old Grandad used to say, so if the Boot Lid works except for the noise, just put up with it and dont leave it open to long, unless it starts giving more serious trouble. Managed to fix it myself. The boot latch actuator was the problem, probably a broken plastic cog inside, I wasn't able to confirm. I just bought an identical one off ebay at £20, and replaced it myself - half an hour job.
