Exhaust centre section to DPF,bolts or studs?
Hi I've got a 2006 XC70 D5 Euro 4. The original exhaust is past its best so I was planning on replacing it with an aftermarket one (rare as hen's teeth, but thats another story) Prior to undertaking the main task I intended to first replace the fixings between the DPF and the long pipe that connects to the end silencer so that it would be easier when I came to bolt on the new system. I assumed they were just nuts and bolts but after a quick look what should be the 'heads' are so rusted that I cannot tell if they were nuts and flange bolts or the centre pipe actually had studs fitted. I had a look in VIDA but what is a one piece section on my car was updated to a two piece(centre section pipe then rear silencer with nuts & bolts at the pipe/DPF join) so I have nothing to compare. I'd hoped to be able to just grind the heads off and punch the bits out but if they are studs its a different proposition.Does anyone know before I start grinding at the rusty remnants what I should expect?

Hi,
I too had the same problem when replacing the exhaust. What looked like nuts seemed to be round 'nut like'. I think they are fasteners that must have been put on by a machine and crushed on to the thread. As I got new bolts with the exhaust I just cut the 'nut' off with a Dremmel. As I half expected to have to cut the bolts off I was prepared to cut them. My replacement exhaust came from ebay. (search on the forum for links) Good quality and fitted with no problems. Not stainless but a lot cheaper. Bob

I got a much longer and closer look this last weekend and am now certain that the exhaust centre pipe is connected to the DPF with studs rather than nuts and bolts. I'd guess that it was standard on Volvos of its age. Ho Hum, just means I'll have to do the replacement 'all in one' - weather, time and neighbours ongoing building works that currently prevent access to the only flat place I have to work permitting!

As far as I can remember - mine's a 2003 MY2004 V70 D5 - they are a spline fitting into the flange so should be able to be knocked out...if they're not rusted solid. IIRC I had to replace one with a bolt when I fitted a replacement, second hand, original Volvo front section, turbo to centre box.
