No power to injectors
Hi again guys! This week my 2003 XC90 D5 failed to start. I've been meaning to get the injectors out as cold starting has become more difficult recently. I've replaced the battery and glow plugs in the last year so am ruling those out. I have a set of NOID lights and just thought I'd check the injectors are getting power. I've connected the correct light to each injector plug and the light is not coming on for any of them when cranking. I've checked all the fuses I think are relevant for continuity and they're all good. I'm not sure what to check next?! Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Cheers Tony

I forgot to mention that I plugged my OBD2 reader in and there are no error codes. I think that's a bit strange if there's no power getting to the injectors??

Your injectors won't receive any signal if rail pressure doesn't achieve around 2000 psi during cranking so check the rail pressure during cranking.
If pressure isn't rising enough, the most obvious cause will be an injector excessively leaking back which you can narrow down further by carrying out a leak back test. This is really common on 2002/03 D5 so I wouldn't look at alternatives until you've done the above.

Thanks alot for that info. I've seen your video demonstrating the leak back test which is great. Am I right in saying I'll have to use easy start to get the engine started in order to do the leak back test? It sounds like my problem is probably injectors then?

How can I check rail pressure? Would you do a leak back test first?

I've decided to get the injectors out anyway. I'm using SiRobb's video method using carb cleaner and patience! I've got three out already......

Are you planning on curing potential excessive leak back with cleaning?

Yes. I was going to ask your advice. Might they need "servicing"? I'm not sure whether it's possible to just clean them in the DIY environment and put them back or having got them out, should I send them away to an injection specialist for checking? The latter is what I'm thinking of doing but I don't know exactly what they would do?

I don't know of any DIY fix for an excessively leaking injector and disassembly requires specialist tools.
An injector specialist could recondition them but there's no guarantee they will restore them to the perfect operation for the Volvo Class number system. Replacing with new is very expensive £1200+ so used injectors with better longevity from a newer model year is my preference for a long term fix at a reasonable price. I have a complete set of 5 x Class 1 injectors taken from a perfectly running 2005 Euro 3 D5. £230 delivered which is comparable and may be cheaper than refurbishing all of your current ones. These are plug and play with a Class 1 system but if your Class system is different, a 5 minute reprogram with Vida will give optimal performance. The Class number (1, 2 or 3) is stamped on top of each injector.
