The videos are quite amazing/stomach churning. Many cars fare far worse than the 90 in the small overlap test and fold up with horrific consequences for the driver and some occupants.

In contrast check out the Kia Soul. Not in the same class as the 90 obviously, but very sobering.

Love my 90.

Cheers
Paul

That is the very reason I drive a car I can barely afford; I look upon it as a type of life insurance.

Although as the design of the XC90 has been almost unchanged since inception, you could run an older car and have the same/equivalent life unsurance at a more affordable cost....

Cheers,
Paul

That is a very similar crash that my sister and their family experienced recently in a BMW 1 series. The other vehicle, a Kia Sedona, was on the wrong side of the road and they hit at almost the same angle. Ripped of the NSF suspension and caved in both passengers doors. A few bruises from the seat belt pre-tensioners but they all came away ok.
I told her to get a 90 next. As I like to put it, more air bags in a 90 than funbags in a porn mag!

Very sobering thought..

My Sis has virtually given up looking for a decent XC90 (as I refuse to sell her ours ) so she's been looking at others, amongst them, the Golf Plus....

Have just whatsapped her the link to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-GTTdnpGNg

I do not think that this is a fair test,
XC90 should run against a Touareg, and a
Golf against an S40, same size vehicles.
In both cases the swedes will score better
Eventually.

I think its ment to be a more realistic real world test as you can't dictate who you crash with. Having pulled people out of a crash simillar to this where the cars were a Renault modus and a skoda octavia. I would rather have a safer car than the flashy one as the doors on the modus opened but they wouldn't on the skoda which was a newer and much bigger car.

Fully agree,
However, and as you all know that the front shock absorbing bumpers on an XC90 is designed at a standard car height, in order not to inflict major damage to non SUVs.
Very smart indeed.

I noticed whilst viewing the XC90 clip - there was a clip of the new Range Rover too. I'm sure the overlap looked about the same - but you can clearly see that the Volvo deflects the impact sideways away from the passenger compartment and the car continues forward.
The Range Rover although absorbs the impact - but it pretty much stops on the spot and takes the full energy into the vehicle lifting the rear wheels off the ground...
Don't get me wrong - I luurrve Range Rovers - but I don't think I'd want to get hit by one !!
I think whatever I was in I'd stand a better chance being hit by the XC because of its energy management.
God forbid - I never have to find out :-)
