Hi there, great write up and good to see you are doing all the bits that are needed.

My 854 had the oil under the spark plug cover in all the small crevices even after I had done the oil breather pipes; (if you have the car running with the engine warm and you pull the dipstick out, if it smokes then the breather is blocked!) parts are available at the Volvo dealership as a kit for about £50. Common fault is the oil filler cap has a small gasket/rubber seal which hardens and then you lose oil through it, again a couple of quid from the local Volvo parts dept. Now, no more oil leakage.. sorted.

I also have a n/s headlamp washer motor that you are more than welcome to have as I have removed mine. The o/s motor is a little bit of a bitch to get to so I just cut the arm off and it is still fitted but you can't see it lol..

Keep up the good work,

Scott..

ps. sorry, just to add; you said she goes very fast, spinning wheels etc. a quick check to see if it has had a remapped ecu is either take the ecu out and it may have a sticker on it like, 'Rica' or the quickest way is if the turbo gauge (build into the dials, above the fuel gauge) goes of the scale to the right when on full boost. Standard should go 3/4 to 4/4 of the white but a remap will go further round out of the white at about 2 o'clock. hope this helps..

Frobes:

Thanks - yeah, I've read up a lot (as you do) on the PCV system issues, mine has NO gas at all coming up the dipstick tube at the moment, so I've going to leave that for another day.

Good point about the oil filler cap washer - I think I'll invest in one, as I suspect this has been happening.

Thanks for the offer of a wiper motor - I think gdphillips has a pair, and as there's some other bits I'd like from him I think I'll go that route. I'll come back to you if I need to though!

Re-map - I'll have a look for a sticker when I take the ECU box out sometime, no turbo guage on a V70 so can't tell that way. It may well be un-modified, but sure goes well.

Cheers!

Just spent the day replacing the PCV system, I also replaced the duff oil filler cap seal. While I was at it i cleaned the Idle Air valve and the Throttle body. They were aboslutely caked with filth! Ran the engine after I finished, no faults, no warning lights and in general running a lot smoother, although the idle is a little higher. Gonna take it for a good run tomorrow after and see how it compares to before.

Then I can get around to finishing off the install of my Alpine Mp3 CD Changer!

Finally, need to give the car a good clean, as its bloody filthy now!

Hmm - that's interesting, mine runs OK but I bet the throttle body hasn't been looked at in ages and is probably in similar condition to yours, so I think I might have a look at mine too - I'd rather do all this sort of maintenance now while it's off the road then hopefully it will be sorted and uber reliable once it's properly on the road and won't keep needing attention, so that's probably a nother job for the list I think.

Thanks for that.....

Gum Gum paste will work for a small hole but wont last very long better to weld a plate over it if you have the equipment if not try some of that JML metal putty stuff roll it in your hand till soft then place/spread over hole sets like concrete in a few minutes supposed to be able to repair metal plastic & all sorts of other stuff I have used it to repair a couple of catches on the caravan windows & they still work fine.

I'll 2nd that on the 'instant metal' stuff. I used it on my 240 in 2004 to get it through the Contrôle Technique & it was still rock solid nearly two years later when I eventually replaced the pipe

Funnily enough I cleaned my Idle Control Valve & throttle body only last weekend. Car was running fine except for the mileage had dropped from around 28.4 to 26.2. Hasn't improved, but at least another little jobby had been ticked off.

Going to look & see what state the plugs are in tomo' as I've just looked in my notes & it had done 20,000 since I replaced them along with the cap & rotor. I've not touched them since

Totally agree - weld every time unless you like getting under there every year....

One bodge I did on an old smoker a while ago that lasted a little longer was to use gun gum (other exhaust pastes are available) smeared over a cut-open beer can (other tinned beverages are available). Then fold it round the exhaust pipe and hold in place with two very large jubilee clips (other helical drive expanding clamps are available). The tin can metal will tend to hold the sealant in place and stop it blowing out.

However, where the "hole" is will determine whether this is a viable fix or not.

In any event it won't last - weld it!

My exhaust had signs of being bodged up a couple of times with gun-gum - I had to grind it all off. Of course it didn't work - as you can see the whole pipe fractured in the end, so it got welded.

Cheers!
