Default 6 speed manual - early failure?

I posted a few weeks ago trying to track down a 'rubbing' noise on my dad's V70. Well, he ended up taking it to the local dealer who diagnosed a failing gearbox!!!

The car is on an 06 plate, has only done 48k miles, he's owned it for 40k of those and being over 70,doesn't give it a hard time ;-) it's been dealer serviced until very recently.

My own geartronic is at almost 180k, has been flushed once and is still silky smooth, I would have expected a manual to have outlasted an auto!

My questions are:

Has anyone else experienced a low(ish) mileage manual g/b failure - particularly the 6 speed box?
What have the causes been?
What experience on Volvo UK 'goodwill' payments has anyone had (and the best tactics to getting them!)

Presently he's using the car only very occasionally, whilst weighing up the options of a £3500 dealer bill or getting a used box from a breakers and fitted by an indy... any other options?

Your thoughts are most welcome!

Symes.

I think I'd get a second opinion before doing anything to the car.

Thanks for the feedback, the dealer dropped some of the transmission fluid which was apparently full of silver particles... there's no excess vibration, and the only noise is on the overrun with no load? Maybe I should have a poke around myself :-)

Don't poke around yourself or even consider a recon box

Get on to Volvo and ask them to investigate. A manual box should basically last for the life of the car. I've never heard of one go awol unless some guy has filled it with the wrong fluid (or filled it with air)

An alternative is to try another dealer for a second opinion, but I still think Volvo is your best option

Thanks for the advice guys, i'll maybe take it to a dealer near to me and let them take a look too. I certainly would expect more longevity than this!
