Default Brake sticking?

Hello

I have a D5 S60 2004.
I replaced the hand brake shoes about 6 months ago with no problems.

I have been away for a week and the car has been left on the drive in gear with the handbrake off.

I have just done a 50 mile (Mainly motorway) run and getting out of the car I have a major clutch/brake smell.

Looking around the car, the rear passenger side wheel was very hot. The hub was too hot to touch, so I have a problem..

Guttered really as I have a long journey to make at the end of the week..

I don't think it will be the shoes as they have been ok for 6 months, and I did not engage them whilst I was away?? So can the calliper cease?? Is there anything I can do. I still have the tools that I used to take the brakes apart, that hex tool thingy..

I am just concerned that I could take the lot apart, then really don't know what next to do. I did notice when pulling away yesterday for the first time after a week the brake catching a bit, a little squeal for a bit??

Any advice gratefully received..
Any brake specialist recommendations on the Wirral??

try jacking that side wheel off ground and see if it turns freely then press brakes and see if it still turns? this may take the brakes out of the equation. Could it be the wheel bearing? Mine gave off a low droan that got loder at higher speeds. When on jacks no evidence of play could be found but a new bearing cured noise.

it could be the handbrake cable sticking with rust/dirt

Hi .. Had same prob on mine 2002 v7o t5 .. My caliper did cease on passenger rear .. Wheel was red hot and same smells as yours .. Even slightly melted centre cap .. Lost it .. Got a second hand fitted it no probs since .. Think Volvo wanted about 130.00 quid for it .. Steve

Just whack a new caliper on there - such an easy job to do!

You'll probabaly find the wheel runs freely when cold, but as the brake starts warming up, the stickiness of the brake worsens

Volvo do charge a lot for new calipers, but I've been happy with reconditioned units from mylocal factor at a fraction of the cost

Although I did use locktight to reattach the nuts I am thinking something is not right maybe after my shoe replacement a while back. I will take it all apart and put everything back together.

With regard to a calliper replacement, wouldn't I have to bleed part of the system afterwards?? Should I replace the shoes at the same time??

Thanks again.

I just had to replace another caliper on my V70 - it must be the age! 3 out of 4 now replaced in the last 12 mths!

£51+VAT from German and Swedish (GSF)for a reconditioned caliper... Can't complain.

Yes, you do have to bleed the section you've dismantled. I have a Gunson Easy-bleed thingamer which I throughly recommend.

You don't have to replace the pads atthe same time, but it's worth considering whileyou have the thing in bits!

if you have a brake hose clamp you should be able to just clamp the flexible hose a couple of inches from the caliper so when you put the replacement on you should only need to bleed the new one,

Guys
Today I have taken the lot apart.
Handbrake shoes are looking fine, just as I replaced them the other month.

Everything looks like it should be working just fine.

The piston thingy in the calliper, should this be able to be pushed back in?? And if so does it require quite some force?

If I release the brake peddle, I can turn the wheel by hand so suggests it is not sticking??? Went for a little run, and all 4 disks are quite hot, but this one is still a little hotter than the others I think??

Should I change the calliper as a precaution?? I have a three hour motorway drive on Thursday that I can not afford any timing issues with for breakdowns..

Lastly, I know you are all going to say this is a no no and very dangerous.. But, if I did have a calliper failure, could I remove the calliper and limp home on three brakes???? Honest answers please?

Thanks

it is not advisory but you could get yourself a hose clamp and clamp that wheel off as an emergency measure but be warned have an accident and your insurance will be void
