well as always correct diagnosis is step 1 isnt it, people on forums can only go by what information they've been told with the best will in the world..

again I would say take it to a garage. surely even a normal non volvo specialist would tell you if a linkage or bushing has had it

if you've got the box off, and you're planning to keep the car a whiles, it's probably daft not to change the clutch anyway (pending price and your budget of course)

re: work, what you can you .. cars are a pain sometimes

personally I would probably book a week annual leave for asap, and just drive it until then with my fingers crossed

with a week off you can do pretty much anything if you set your mind to it

wouldn't hurt to at least ring for a quote from a volvo place

quick google search throws up this lot near stockport: https://hallmarkmotorservices.co.uk/

they might not want to let you supply parts though that's the only snag, I have that issue a lot, I say I've already got the bits I just need you to fit them and they just go quiet on me because they like making a killing hiking part prices

I would maybe supply the box and ask them to supply the clutch, then they can write on the receipt guarantee on clutch only, which would be fair

(if it isnt just the linkage etc)

Hallmark in Stockport is a very good garage, so its worth giving them a ring.

Mike (main chap) is very knowledgeable & helpful, but these guys are usually busy, so expect to wait a few days before actually dropping the car off. Another words, don’t be expecting him to drop tools just to look at your car… that won’t happen.

Unfortunately this V70 has thrown in the towel. I couldn't get even a clue how to diagnose/fix this issue so with no reverse gear and the worry about a possible total gearbox failure I had to act quickly as I cannot risk missing work so I took the plunge, found a decent XC70 locally and manage to px the V70. Now I am 100% mobile again
