2006/7 XC90 D5 oil consumption & soot filter full - FIXED?
Hi all,
I’ve read what seems like million posts about the 2006/7 era of D5 engines regards high oil consumption and soot filter full. Has anyone successfully fixed these issues and if so what would you say was the most likely problem? Thanks in advance. Last edited by CJM625; Nov 28th, 2023 at 11:17. |

My 2006 (07 model) D5 was using a tonne of oil due to leaking out the swirl port. If you see my other posts I have tried to resolve this recently and it's not going well. I have also had soot filter full randomly appear even during a long motorway run. I believe this may have been caused by the same oil leak and swirl issues. I have tested on VIDA since oil leak and swirl channel renewed and DPF says 5g of soot which I believe is perfectly ok. Do you have access to VIDA to see if it's actually full or lying? |

Hi,
I have a 2008 D5 on a XC70. It's consuming oil since around 1~2 years (according to previous owner), but getting worse. As I'm leaving in a quite hilly place, I notice that the engine is burning lots of oil right after breaking with engine, making some thick blue smoke if breaking with engine for a considerable amount of time. That makes me thinking that the issue might not be the piston rings, but negative pressure on the engine head sucking up oil from the cilinders. Diesel consumption is awful as well and DPF is regenerating constantly, which makes sense with pressure issue... Don't know where to go from here, would love to hear some opinions! |

Hi, there have been several threads on here relating to excessive oil consumption on the D5 and one common factor has been the PCV valve which is situated right next to the oil filter housing. The part is readily available for under £30 and easy enough to change, especially if you actually remove the oil filter housing to do the job but obviously you would need a new oil filter housing gasket when refitting. Because this part is cheap, I would start there before doing anything else. 👍 This is the part I refer to BUT make sure yourself that this is the correct one for your particular car. https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...ather/1033347/
