DPF problems?
I am looking at purchasing an XC60. However I have some hesitation due to the overall issues with DPF's in lots of turbo diesel engines. I am some distance from the dealer and that is a concern if this plays up. I have a few concerns namely:
1. Is it an issue? 2. Is it more problematic with short driving trips? 3. Is it an issue with lots of country driving or does than alleviate the issue? Any comments / advice? Thanks. |

I have never come across any problems with the actual DPF's in the XC60s.
The DPF temp sensors sometimes fail. |

I have a 2011 V60 D3 manual (different car, obviously, but one of the engine options fitted to the XC). 5,000 miles up and no problems.
My normal driving is 3.5 miles to work in the morning, 3.5 miles back home, and lots of 'Dad's taxi' duty in urban limits. The car will only get a long A-road or motorway run every 2 - 3 weeks. Regenerations are unobtrusive (certainly compared with my previous Mondeo TDCI). According to the manual, when the DPF is around 70% full and needs a regeneration, you get a warning light and an in-dash message, following which you're supposed to drive at reasonable speeds (2,000rpm or so) for 20 minutes. However, I've yet to see that message pop up. My 10p worth is, if you'll be doing a 20+ minute drive at least once per week, where you're not doing stop-start crawling in traffic but tootling along at 40mph+, you'll be OK. DPF-equipped cars do NOT need thrashing to clear the filter: they just need to get the filter matrix thoroughly warmed up. Steady driving with the engine in the fat part of the torque range (around 2,000rpm) is good for this. Last edited by craigv60; Oct 10th, 2011 at 09:10. |

15000 miles - mixed driving, we've not had a problem with the DPF clogging.
I've not even seen a message appear about the need to go for a run. |
