Default Jumps out of gear, plus noises.

Whining noise at around 60mph for past few weeks, then popped out of 5th gear on motorway. Proceeded to next services, holding gear stick in place. When slowing down, loud grinding noise from gearbox. Noise goes away when clutch depressed.
Concerned about travelling further and causing more damage, called out Green Flag. Rescue man said it sounded like a failing clutch and thrust bearing?

Any advise gratefully received, before booking car in for a new clutch to be fitted.

Car 2004 S40 with 32,000 on clock. Had the car from new.

If it is the renault based gearbox it is probably the 5th gear retaining nut loose , it is inside teh mtal can cover on the end of teh gearbox , an easy job to tighten . If you havent let it get damaged too much that is ! . A clutch wont make it pop out of gear ...

Thanks for that Clan,

Any idea what the cost for this work would be at a Volvo garage?

They will have to drain oil and take the cover off and tighten the nut and re fill with new oil ( £40 ) About an hour should cover that . say £150 - £200, This will usualy cure the problem ,but if it has been loose for a long time damage may have occured .

Thanks Guys,

Is it common to get the "whining noise" before the 5th gear problem starts? Or is this another problem for me to worry about?
