The strangest thing is that the stainless shim is cheaper that the "normal" one (made of steel I suppose).

That's not the main difficulty for me.
The problem is that I am not sure (I don't know) which one fits my calipers
Any of the 2, both???

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.
Shims aren't available from Volvo anymore.

So how do you prevent squealing?

Clean the calipers thoroughly with a wire brush, and lubricate the backs of the pads and the parts of the caliper they slide on with copper grease.

IIRC you get shims if you buy Bosch pads, certainly did when buying them for the rear of my 850

I've never bothered with shims on any car and never ever had squealing brakes.
As wooble says, with calipers in good order and a bit of copperease on the back of the pads (and on the sliding edges) brakes just don't squeal.

Whenever I have had any kind of noise from a brake it's been because of worn out pads, sticking piston, rust or debris getting trapped, or pads not seating properly because of a wear ridge at the extremity of the bearing surface.

I can't make anything of those pictures, they are far too big.

I thought the general rule was that if the pins have an R clip then they are giRling calipers?

But there are in fact two different sizes ofGirling rear calipers. Some pads are 62mm long, some 63mm. (Sizes from memory - anyway, some are a bit longer than the other).
The bigger ones won't fit in the smaller slot, the small one fits in a larger but will rattle horribly. You can if pushed either make up a shim out of tinplate with loops to hook round one of the pins, or grind down a larger one to fit.

I've just done that in fact. I had a stock of new pads for my previous Volvo (1992 GL) which took the larger. My new one (1991 GL) takes the smaller.

I've never encountered any non-Girling brakes, only the two sizes of Girling.

Our old '79 265 has ATE rear brakes, but Girling are far more common.
