After 30 years the cat on my 1990 745 is still the original one and at MOT time the engine continues to produce totally acceptable low exhaust measurements well below the requirements for '92 engines although entitled to far higher limits.

Does this mean it is worth more because of superior metals inside?

I'd suggest the "original" cats were built to a function rather than a price Bob, in other words they were over-engineered to do the job at least 10 years (that's how long they were meant to last) and the car companies didn't want comebacks on something that expensive so built them better.

Now they're built to a price but i doubt you'd get more for yours because there would be some reason or other the purchasers would come up with.
