Puzzling really, because my previous car was a 2004 V70 which had the same system and worked perfectly! I never had to use the manual system - just left it on auto all the time.

I have a 2011 Exec, and the wipers exhibit the same erratic behaviour - so no improvement on earlier versions.
I frequently have to switch off the auto function, usually to stop the wipers operating after the rain/spray has stopped, and to stop the wipers smearing the glass.
I switch it on again so they operate when it rains, but surely this on/off procedure shouldn't be necessary.

Our 2009MY work superbly well, I'm actually quite impressed with them, only down side is you have to turn the function on every journey, push the button on the stalk to engage/re-engage the auto function, otherwise excellent.

Slightly related - I had a BMW 320i until recently and that had rain sensing wipers. They worked superbly well, going like fury in a downpour, and in light rain they gave a single flick wipe just as you were thinking it was needed.
Then I had to have the windscreen changed and they became rubbish - even on high sensitivity I would be waiting for them to come on and usually ended up manually turning them on.
Had the windscreen guy back to check it and also the garage that serviced the car, but it never improved.
How would you know if the screen had never been changed, unless you had it from new?
