Hi. I bought my 2001 Y reg S60 2.0T two months ago from a Volvo dealer and last week I heard about the ETM issue from a friend who had seen Watchdog last week.

When I bought the car the salesman didn't mention anything to do with this issue (to be honest I wouldn't expect him to!) but I don't know if the car has had the software upgrade that people are mentioning. However the car is running well and I have no problems but should I contact the garage anyway to get the software update? Also the car was sold with a parts and labour warranty would anyone know if getting the ETM replaced would cover this?

Thanks for your help in advance
Martin

Hi and welcome to the forums

Ok, not sure if you've read the 100's of ETM threads going around especially now (plus the sticky) but basically the answer is yes.

I'm sure you would rather ensure that the update is done, or needs to be done and carry it out rather than finding out at 70mph on the motorway, you go into limp mode in the fast lane.

Its more about safety than anything, if you had kids in the car or just yourself, last thing you want is to get stranded in a dangerous position and now that its dark and winter... well you get the point

get it checked, from what I gather, as its a recall, its a free fix too.

As for the dealer, most dealerships won't know anything apart from sales tactics. They stay well clear of servicing and you'll find only thos enthusasts will know about the ins/outs of the car. I think on top of that, they are not allowed either because if somethign is said wrong, then potentially, you could blame the dealership rather than their servicing dept.

Feel free to correct me on the above though!

Is there an easy way to find out if you have an faulty ETM? Like by a website by using your registration or chasis number?

Im just worried if I have a ticking timebomb too.

I don't think 2002 cars were affected, only 2000 and 2001. Just call your dealer and ask them, they can search their database using your reg number.

There have been some early 2002 cases as well,

The recall isnt for the ETM replacement, mearly just the software update and a full ETM clean (+ inspection), usually takes about 3 hours so try for a courtesy at the same time.
