Don't know the legalities of a private individual getting that info, but if Cowboy Clampers and such like can, then who knows.

If you still have any documents relating to it, specifically the regn certificate reference no., then you can look up its MOT history, which will tell you the garage it was last MOT'd at. There is just a chance the owner still lives nearby, so a bit of local detective work might conceivably pay off.

hi
no i havent got any paperwork as all the history went with the car, its been 7 years now, would be good to get it back again but its not likely to happen, thought somebody may know where it is and i could contact the owner to see if they would sell me it back, maybe someone will come up with an answer? you never know!!! |

All you need to do is complete an online application at DVLA saying a car with that number damaged your property but didn't stop. For a small fee (£5) they will give you the owner's name and address.
It's probably illegal, but you could, if challenged, say you were only relying on what a bystander thought the number was, and he obviously got it wrong. You also run the risk of course of antagonising the owner and jeopardising any potential sale. It does work though - I traced the owner of a van who had smashed our drainpipe at work. Unnecessary as it turned out, because he later came in to confess. |
