As you said in the video, you need to depress the paddle on the front of the gear lever handle to get from N to R. There is a mechanical lock which is electrically operated:

Shift-lock

To avoid any chance of the gear selector inadvertently moving from the P position, the car is also equipped with an electrically operated shift-lock function. This locks the interlock pin in the gear selector lever in the shift-lock section, locking the selector lever in the P position. To move the gear selector from the P position, the ignition must be switched on and the brake pedal depressed. (The stop lamp switch is activated.). The central electronic module (CEM) reads the position of the brake pedal via direct connection to the brake pedal sensor and transmits a signal to the gear selector control module (GSM) to deactivate the solenoid in the gear lever selector. The solenoid lock pin is pushed in and the gear selector lock button can be pressed down as usual to select another gear. When the ignition is in position "0", the solenoid is deactivated. In this position the shifter is mechanically locked by the key lock cable.

That's where you should investigate. It may be this solenoid lock which is causing the problem. To open the lock you need:

Power on
Brake pedal pressed
Paddle on gear selector depressed?

Also check the brake pedal sensor. If you don't find the issue look for mechanical problems in the interlocks.

Default Selector Stuck in Neutral & Drive

Hi gmonag

I have now released the selector and got the car into park.

I had to push the leaver at the front of the Selector upwards not depressed it as normal !!!!!

I was then able to squeeze the leaver at the front of the selector and was now
getting resistance / spring type feeling if that make sense?

Seem to be something inside the top of the selector leaver was misaligned and the leaver was not working at all no resistance just free play.?

Not sure why pushing the other way got it to work but I will need to look further into to find out as it might happen again.

Thanks for the help anyway this is a very useful and helpful forum.

Might have to look for a new selector stick / leaver

Regards Pete :-)

Default Gear Shift Replacement

I now believe that the release switch on the top of the
Gear Shift is loose - Broken and needs a switch replacement.

I think the Part Number is 8675628
for a Volvo XC90 D5 SE silver top / Chrome

I have looked on YouTube and it seems with force pull out and replace the reverse way.

( Its a shame you cannot just buy a new switch to fit :-(

Its a bit long but all I could find on this problem

Not sure if anyone else has had the same problem.?

Regards Pete.

Will keep you updated to Price and fitting

Default Gear shifter frozen in drive & neutral

Fearing that this problem was worse than it was, perhaps even electrical, I messaged my mechanic who guided me to insert my finger under the plastic lever and to press a tiny lever that can be felt with the index finger, and to move the gearshifter forward while doing so. It worked! So now, I probably will have to replace the entire gear shifting unit. Has anyone done this?

I am starting to have problems with the gear selector knob on my 2007 3.2 and need to replace it.

Has anyone fitted one of the replacement buttons (rather than replacing the whole knob) and if so how is it done? Looking at my existing button, I just cant see how the button can be removed from the knob and the new one refitted.

I have looked on You Tube etc but cant find anything.

Many thanks

Check the cable release under the steering wheel, there's a red/orange clip in there that pops out if it's not fully home it won't release the key &/ gear shift had the issue a while ago and managed to sort it.

See photos below. you'll need to remove the casing around the steering column. Photo three shows the cable clip inserted fully the tang clips into the sq hole. squeeze the lever of the orange clip and insert it fully

PS the position can be adjusted by adjusting the threaded end at the gear shifter, if it's slack in any way.

Hope this helps.
