Default Volvo 144 rear screen moulding

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help.

I have a Volvo 144S (1973) model which I have recently had restored. As part of this process, the glass was removed and then reinstated after painting. Unfortunately, the aluminium brightwork in the rear screen rubber moulding, which comes in two halves, was dented (please see attached photo). I wondered about having a 'smart' repair carried out, but I have since made the problem worse by attempting to prise the trim out from the moulding to access the rear. The aluminium appears to be very soft and damages very easily.

I have made enquiries through my friendly Volvo dealer (classic parts) who has, unsuprisingly, advised that this trim is no longer available new. However, the equivalent item is available for the post 1987 240, but this would also necessitate replacement of the rubber moulding which is not compatible with the earlier trim.

As I see it, I have the following options:

• Try to find the corresponding trim from a 144 that someone is breaking. This would need to be in pristine condition. Due to its soft nature, I suspect it would need to be cut from the donor car rubber, so as to avoid any distortion;
• Buy the later post-1987 moulding and insert (priced at £170 incl. VAT). If this doesn’t fit I would lose my money, because the dealer has told me he wouldn’t take it back. Also, I wonder whether the trim would look right cosmetically. Does anyone have a post 1987 Volvo 240 GL saloon that they could photograph for me?
• Remove the insert completely and just have the black rubber moulding visible (least favoured option).

If anyone can help I would be very grateful. The car is in concours condition and it is a shame that it should be let down by something that is ostensibly so minor.

Chris.

Its a wee bump! Mine looks much worse. Im suprised you cant push that out and with a bit of judicious filing and sanding smooth it out. I have some of these mouldings but they'll be worse than what you've got. Sorry I cant be more help.

BTW- post some more pics of the rest of the car, which I suspect is 99.99% top dollar!

It would push out easily but you would probably cause more damage removing it and then replacing it. It's very light and thin. best to leave well alone.
