Default Nope not that.

Its most certainly a noise eminating from the air intake/airbox, as in the You Tube video posted earlier, I,m afraid its looking almost certainly a valve lifter problem, one or two, are giving problems and not closing properly giving this popping sound, the more i investigate the more it points to that!
Strangely it seems to only be a problem on 06/07 builds, wether this was poor quality lifter being used or this extended service interval which to my mind was just crazy! way way too long for 6 litres of oil to work!
i,m hoping other members with these build years to have a good listen to their engines when hot, there would seem to be many on You Tube that have had to go down the top end rebuild which i,m facing, i,m really interested as to what i,m going to find, and certainly concerned wether there is any cam damage or a lifter broken up as on You Tube!

Default Is the engine doomed?

A quick question.. and apologies to Karlywoo for highjacking his thread but he is probably thinking the same thing: If wecarry on ignoring this problem presumably the engine is doomed to fail sometime soon?
Trying to work out the economics of investing in a top overhaul of an engine in a car with 270,000 miles on the clock, in my case.
Many thanks.

Default Costings

Hi i have been doing some costings on the repair on mine, i have to do it as i have invested soo much money in this car, anyway lifters and followers, you have to replace the lot, is £400, then there is £40 for cam box gasket, camshaft oil seals, dunno on those, inlet manifold gasket i,m told, again i dunno but would imagiine at least £20, the obviuosly an oil and filter change £50, then there is the question of do yo change the cam belt while you are in there? mine has done 24k since last change, so should be ok hopefully, then of course the labour question unless you are going to do it yourself, there is quite alot of work here, and some specialist tools, beg borrow etc,
Thankfully i have a good mate that runs a small workshop that will help me out as we go back like forty years working together, i used to be a mechanic before my spinal injury which means i,m pretty much useless and out of touch with the modern engine now!
Quite a hefty amount of parts, and in your case, with a high mileage motor is it worth it? do you just live with it? only you can make that descison, good luck with it, i will let you know how i get on with mine, hopefully quickly?

Default Problem solved

Hi i thought i would just pop by and say the problem has been resolved, expensive but worth it just to hear that engine running sweetly!
The fault was the hydraulic valve lifters and followers, 20 each of those a £400 ouch! plus £200 labour, £600 flaming quid just to get rid of that god awful chuffing!
So if you have an 06 build D5, and have this strange noise in and around the air box area, thats your problem!!

Default State of the lifters..

Hi, I don't suppose you have any of the lifters removed from your engine and can post a pic or two here? I am curious to know what it is about them that fails and if it has anything to do with the lube oil / change interval / grade?
Cheers,
Bill (with a D5 with the same issue)

Default How's the fuel consumption?

Hi Karlywoo, How is the fuel consumption now that you have had the lifters repaired/replaced?
Cheers,

Default After top end rebuild

Hi as above the V70 is back to where it should be, so pleased with the results, it no longer sounds like a steam train chuffing along at idle, ok so it cost £600 to sort but in my case with only 112k on the clock it was very worthwhile!
What i have noticed is that the power is most certainly up, its an auto and i,m very lightfooted, but on a junction/roundabout for example i have to be careful how much i give it as it will whel sin in a heartbeat, so thats one positive, fuel consumption? that i have yet to find out as i have not really gone anywhere with it as yet, i did tow a caravan back at the same time from the repair and it pulled beautifully, so well pleased with the results.
I did look very carefully at the old lifters and followers but could not see anything obvious wear wise, so very strange! but its great now and set for many years of ownership and a pleasure to own and drive!!
Anyone interested take a look at my albums, my V70 WOO looks fabulous now, Many thanks to Mirracoat bodyshop Martham Norfolk for the loving care they have shown it!
Oh the WOO on the plate is in memory of my boy, in my avatar, he was the the most wonderful German Shepherd i have had the privilege to have in my life, his name was Karl, which somehow turned into Karlywoo, and then WOO, as he was such a lovely big WooWoo, bless him, sadly passed last August.
