It's Volvos fault for using the Lambda symbol for the engine management/malfunction indicator light because people immediately assume that if the light comes on, it is the Lambda sensor at fault but that isn't always the case. The Lambda sensor measures the exhaust gas CO content, or to be more exact, the Oxygen content and from that computes the CO content. Sometimes called HEGO sensors (Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen) they give a signal to the ECU so it can maintain the correct mixture under all conditions. Many other sensors can cause the EML/MIL to come on, not just the Lambda sensor. Would i be right in thinking your EML (Lambda) light has appeared on your instrument cluster?
