Heavy steering is it normal

I have switched from a 2008 VW Passat . The first thing I noticed was how heavy the steering felt compared to what I'm used to . Is this normal ? I put it down to the size / Weight of the car and the fact it's AWD . Or should I be concerned and investigate ? The guy I bought from said it's how they are due to the above , I trusted him on this . Thanks all ,
