2007 2.4 diesel knock
Hi all,
Hoping to get bit of help after a little issue. I've got a boat with the volvo 5 cylinder 2.4 engine with only 100 hours of running on it and unfortunately in rough seas the dipstick decided it would rather fly out than stay in the engine so ran low on oil. I've now got a ticking noise which I assume is from the lifters as it sounds like it is from the top end by sounds of it. Unfortunately there is no oil pressure warnings on the marine engines (yes, stupid, thanks volvo for that gem). Im wonder how easy it is to throw new lifters and rocker arms in it as its cheap enough to try it, I've no idea on if they need adjusting or a case of just putting them in? Unfortunately the marine manual doesn't want you doing this stuff so any help be great. https://youtube.com/shorts/i4mi-FsMSYA?feature=share |

There are also a few of those engines in cars without the oil pressure sensor
I placed one in in the original spot and connected a led those dipsticks wont fly off by themselves and that dont throw out all the oil i guess , maybe excessive crankcase pressure? And if so what was the cause of that pressure? excessive wear? do you have an oillevel sensor btw? The sound your engine is making arent the lifters that much i know, i fear its rodknock Last edited by 5cilinder; Jul 29th, 2023 at 08:41. |

There is a sensor but don't know what point of it is when doesn't alarm but one for another day.
I'm going to put an oil pressure gauge on it today and see what oil pressure it has, if it's normal it's unlikely to be from the big ends. It sounds like it's from the top of engine but intend to also take the cam cover off and have a look. |

I think its not the lifters ......and to look and test them you need to remove the injectors and piping to get the valvecover off and to get to the lifters you need to remove the camshafts... to replace it all i was busy 10 hours .
and i had not even the knocking sound , only soft lifters If you have enough oil now you likely have enough oilpressure but what is the damage if you have run it with not enough oil for how long? To inspect the rod bearings its easier beneath a car ... in a boat its far more difficult . A carefull listening round with a stethoscope will likely point you in some direction |

I would be interested to see how this goes. I am from Glasgow with 5 cylinder in the car but my wee boat engine is a Yanmar 1gm10

Well the oil pressure is fine as tested with a gauge in the block so whilst possible it isn't likely anything to do with the big ends.
From having oil to virtually no oil was a total of 21 minutes. Have ruled out injectors, unplugged them one at a time and noise no different. Next thing likely is get cams etc out and check the lifters and go from there. The noise does sound like it is from the top of engine but confined space so hard to tell 100%. At some point head also will come off so check bores etc. Head also also needs skimmed as gases in coolant now but that's not a biggy, probably popped the head gasket between cylinders but compression check will sort that. No, that's very unlikely to be required.
The head absolutely needs doing, choice is skim the head and reseat the valves and use the stock gasket and allow the lifters to take up the difference or thicker gasket and don't touch the valve seats, will see in due course. |

Coud it be the vacuum pump .the plunger has been a fault which crops up may need replacing. That's what can happen on the older generation D24 6 cylinder engine. Only a thought but the noise will be clicking
