Regarding how long to do the job-how long is a piece of string, it will vary with your own abilities ,how fast you want to be back on the road and if you aren't dependent on the weather, ie- you'll be doing it in your own garage. The bonus is you won't have a workshop manager looking over your shoulder timing you, so just do it at a steady and methodical pace, i would allow a day to get it stripped and cleaned up, yes cleaning the ports is worthwhile-having a tube from a vacuum cleaner at the ready, also some liquid gasket sealant on reassembly on the swirl flap plastic bush and inlet cam end cap, also while you're at it cleaning the egr valve body is worth doing, can be done in situ with blunt scrapers and carb cleaner or if you take it off do it from the 4 bolts on the throttle body far easier than taking it off complete with the cooler tube,I would also allow a day to put everything back-[proper bona fide mechanics will be squirming in their boots by now]-don't worry it's not a race. Goes without saying if you do the timing belt then just get a full kit with idler and tensioner pulleys- original volvo kits available for good prices from either FRF in Swansea, or volvoparts trade on ebay -not worth compromising on those parts also worth doing the auxilliary belt as that breaking can throw the timing belt off and cause damage also spin the water pump by hand if nice and smooth and quiet leave it alone as has been said on here before, regarding special tools i would say the main one would be the crankshaft holding tool-[the 4 bolt hole fixing with attached bar, as the main crankshaft big nut is torqued to around 250lbft, the locking pins for crank and camshaft aren't necessary but make it foolproof if you haven't got a good rack o thye-[Yorkshire speak] or if you look at the diagrams in the haynes manual you can give the dimensions to your local engineering shop and they will make you them for around £30.Sorry for suggesting the extra works, but it's just makes sense if you intend to keep the car long term, but the choice is yours, and only tackle it if you are fully confident, but you would be saving the thick end of a grand in labour costs [approx] Main thing is you have got time on your side to decide whether you get quotes from garages or get all your necessary parts together ready. If you haven't fell asleep by now please keep us posted of the outcome, cheers.

I am having the same problem with my 56 d5 185 xc90 just on 193500 miles I am going to be changing all the rockers and lifters on it. It is due its cambelt soon anyway but it’s the tapping as well it’s awful. I have a c30 d5 too and that is silent.

I will be buying them from Lymm engine components for £192 all in for 20 and a specialist is going to fit them and do the cambelt and service it as well.

That's a super price. Shame they don't do the rest of the parts I need

I know what you mean it’s going to be around £800 bill coming up to have everything done but hopefully will make the engine nice and quiet.

I will start a thread in the xc90 section with before and after to hopefully show the difference.

Question for those who have done the job themselves.

With no keyway on the end of cam shaft driven by the belt, how do you ensure it is properly lined up / timed? What did you use to make sure you didn't royally mess it up!?!

Question. As this thing doesn't appear to show itself via conventional ways, exactly how did each of you conclude the lifters were the root cause of the issues?

Its the only way exhaust gas can escape into the inlet, normally the exhaust valve opens first, but due to soft lifters it opens later then the inlet valve.

And its a widespread thing under the euro4 engines

I have had the same problem but left it longer than I should and it’s snapped a rocker and took out the top end look at my thread in the xc90 section and you can hear the engine. My advice don’t leave it.

The resistance on the rocker decreases with soft lifters not increases.
Maybe the lifter got stuck or broke

Well Dan, I've joined your exclusive club and now need a new (non) chuffin engine!

After having to spend £380 having the two stuck injectors taken out, £60 on second hand replacements, over £400 on spares to do the lifters etc, the head was finally stripped down tonight to find one of the lifters had completely destroyed its seat, mangled its rocker arm and also trashed the exhaust camshaft... The very definition of a truly sh1te day

Only some of the missing bits which broke up have been found. God only knows where they are, so it's def not worth trying to rebuild it with my luck. To do so would be the very definition of stupid.

So, some 'Tub Boat sound' lessons for all D5 owners.
- If you get that sound, you are up for some serious spend.
- Get it done FAST.
- Ignore the well meaning but incorrect advice re leaving it.
- If you catch it soon enough it's recoverable, if you leave it it's a new engine...

Speaking of which. can anyone point me in the direction of a trustworthy source of said engines? Pretty please as my budget has become a shoe string
