240 GLT Auto Gearbox Light
Hi,
Should the automatic gearbox cover in 240's have some kind of light to illuminate it when driving at night so you can see the gears etc? If so where is the lighting/bulb housed? Many thanks |

Thanks Antz, I thought it should but I can't find the wiring or bulb for it anywhere! I've just replaced all the carpets in mine as well so everything has been stripped out pretty much..got both heated seats working and the lights for the switches but can't find the autobox light!

You need to remove the surround below the gear lever, there is a screw near the front. (Front facing windscreen) and move it off the rear clip. The bulb holder clicks into a round metal holder on the lever mechanism, just follow the wires to the holder, unclip and fit new bulb. The bulb pulls out like a chrismass tree light. Its not a big bulb, tiny infact. I have just checked my spare bulb but the details of the bulb packet I had cut off to open the packet. I'll post a photo If it helps tomorrow as my bulb died after 2.5 years. James |

I think the wire is red and white for the illumination too.

Bulb replacement.
To replace the bulb on the gear lever position.
First put the gear lever into Neutral. (N) Remove the 2 phillips screws on the front face of the surround of the gear lever. Move and slide back the cover. You will then see this: The silvery thing with the hole in is the bulb holder support bracket. Reach underneath this to pull the bulb housing down. Once out pull out the small bulb. 1.2 watts. 12volts. Insert new bulb, look at the bulb and into the housing, the bulb has an oblong connection which matches the bulb holder. Then push the bulb end back into the holder. Test before assembling the surround. Put ignition on and turn the light switch on, it should light up like this: Refit cover and put gear lever to your normal position! P or N. I did try a photo of the position lit up but too light out. Now you will be able to engage gears in the dark!! James |

I'm pretty sure you can just pull the holder and bulb out. You don't need to unscrew the bulb cover. At least that's how mine works.

All done! Thanks again for the help. I ended up using a bulb from a spare heated seat switch I had as they are the same size. Well pleased!
