You are better off avoiding diesel's if your mileage is low as you probably won't do enough long journeys to regenerate the DPF and that will eventually clog up and cost you £1300+ to put right.

Plus servicing diesels costs more so you won't end up seeing any benefit from the extra mpg gain.

Don't expect the S40 to be of better quality than your 1997 car.

Suspension and air-con issues are very common but on the plus side electrical systems and petrol engines are very robust and the cars don't suffer from rust.

The driving experience with the standard car leaves a lot to be desired; from lack of steering feel to outright discomfort at low speeds with its choppy suspension. Also wheel alignment is very important in terms of tire wear and the cars feel on the road.

They're not bad cars but do need effort and expense to keep them 'right' for enjoyable ownership.

Gosh what a horrible shock it would be to go from a V70R to an S40 with a Ford 4 pot diesel rattler.

THe S40 will obviously feel much more modern to drive, but as suggested I'd get a petrol for your usage and I'd be looking at the T5 or even 2.4i if you care at all about the powertrain of your car being interesting. The Low Pressure Turbo 2.5 they badge as a T5 doesn't deliver the power as entertainingly as the High Pressure Turbo engine in your R but it's a good engine none the less

If you gave me the choice of a V70R or any S40 though I know which I would choose! Any concerns over reliability of an S40 vs your V70 will be totally offset by it's much younger age. Over the next 5 years I'd expect less trouble from the much younger S40.

If you do eventually get a s40 diesel then get the DPF gutted and egr blocked. I have a v50 with no DPF and a blanked egr. I use it for nothing but short trips with no issue whatsoever. The economy equipment fitted to the diesel is what lets it down. If you service it yourself then service costs are fine. Mine costs roughly £70 a year and I do all the filters (excl fuel) every time and use castrol magnatec.

If you can get your hands on a T5 though you would probably be better off, more power and a smoother engine etc.

Electrics on these aren't an issue unless your unlucky. Have had mine since 2009 and havent had anything fail yet.
