Default Locking Wheel Nut Madness

I just spoke to my local dealer because I need to buy a new locking wheel nut adapter. The parts guy told me I need to have a special code to be able to buy one? And if I don't have the code, I can't buy a replacement adapter. I can't even buy new locking wheel nuts and adapter!

When asked what would I do if I had lost my adapter and had no code. He said I was basically knackered. Would have to drill them, weld on another bolt, or he said there was an outside possibility I could 'rent' the master set which has all the different combos on. Trouble is there's only one in the UK!

My adapter is on its last legs so I'm going to pick up four normal bolts for now and hope no ruffians happen to be passing the house :|

Am I the only one who thinks this is absolutely flipping bonkers?! They're not even that nice alloys!!

I think its more of a safety and security thing hence the reason why they are asking for the security code.

As far as i'm aware that the locking wheel adapter/key/socket are the same on mostly all Volvo C30. If needed You could try breakers yard or ebay?

oneilldom. Why bother with locking nuts at all? Remove them all (you get a 19mm socket with 12 segments and bash it on then just undo the nut. It does NOT need welding or other rubbish. Done it myself.

The point is, locking wheel nuts became the norm when alloys were not the norm. Now it's harder to find a car without them, so basically no one is interested in stealing them anymore.

Get rid and buy some std bolts to replace with. No more dealer BS and expense.

I agree. 19mm socket and a small lump hammer. Done it on my other half's CMax. Bit of work but nuts shift eventually (so to speak).

There is a company in germany that actually makes them, you contact them through their website and send a photo of the lock and then they'll ask for scanned proof of ID and the cars V5 and sell you a key for 15 euros.

http://www.mcgard.de/en/customer-ser...ement-key.html

FRF Swansea gave me this information when I needed one. That's an actually good dealership

In all honesty though you are miles better off just replacing them with normal nuts. People steal alloys off ultra high end machines, nobody is on the prowl at night for a set of 17" standard fit wheels from a 7 year old Volvo. I've been bitten by these useless things so many times that it's one of the first things I do upon acquiring a new car now.

I'd take them off and fit standard bolts, as others have said it's not really an issue now-a-days - it would probably look better too.. My car has a tilt alarm anyway.

hahaha this is so true. I'll swing by the dealers tonight. Think the bolts are about £4 each so a pretty cheap swap out. Just hope I can the lockers off with my mangled key!!!

That's OK if you have the older style flat top nuts made by McGard. If you have the newer style ones that look like a normal nut with a wavy pattern around the edge they aren't made my McGard, have no code or master key either.
