A mate has a rust free P1800 that he's spent a lot of time getting perfect. And would be worth quite a bit too. For example he made the inner sills exactly the same as originals as the repro ones weren't to standard. A part you never get to see. Any welding was metal finished and normally TIG welded if practical. The body is perfect with new old stock quarters and wings. I did some painting for him spraying the boot and rear quarters; epoxy primer followed by a 2k Matt/Satin topcoat in grey so it looks like primer. I told him he could just leave it in epoxy primer but he wants to topcoat it so it looks like primer and drive it for a while to get any issues sorted and then flat it back and properly topcoat it later on. Makes no sense to me but he thinks it would be cool and it's his car.

It could be that they assumed (when ordering) and no-one mentioned it. Could also be that the dealership got it wrong - not unheard of! I'm still curious about the timeline (but have been busy working, so haven't yet dug out an 84 brochure). I'm pretty confident that by 85 you had a choice, but the question of the launch year is going to nag at me!

cheers

Some primers are porous and not rainproof, fine if you live in California (it never rains according to a song I heard)

Oh yes, it's got to be a 2K epoxy type product to be worth bothering with (for this application, at least).

cheers

Yeah most are except for epoxy. One reason why epoxy is great for us home bodger's, you can leave it in epoxy primer for as long as you want without worrying it will rust or absorb moisture. I like epoxy mastics for direct to metal as they are very surface tolerant. If you get a good clean key it's never coming off and if you make sure you get the minimum film thickness you don't have to worry about rust coming through ever again. If you go to any decent paint shop now who do classics they all use epoxy now, if not go elsewhere.

Car itself is probably immaculate, might be concours, neither of which make it worth over £4k. No-one is going to pay more than that for a non-historic 244, no matter how perfect. See: Every advert for 240 Saloons ever.

Something in the back of my mind says the 360 was launched in summer 83 in time for the 1984 Model Year and the earliest 360 models will be on an A registration as a result. Might be a few Y reg about as dealer demos to get the sales in perhaps but can't recall ever seeing one.
I think the GLE spec came a bit later, in 1984 but not sure on that - i do remember being disappointed it only had a 4 cylinder engine as tradional Volvo nomenclature until then (as far as i was aware at the time) was the middle digit denoted number of cylinders.
The GLT definitely had L-Jetronic injection from the start though, i had an A reg 360GLT about 25 years back and that was L-Jet.

Will be interesting to see what you can find on launch dates etc, see if i've remembered it even somewhat correctly!
