Default B230FT year 1996?

I've got my hands on a complete B230 engine, turbo and all ancillaries but no history. The cam cover sticker shows B230FT and the block has the tell-tale humps for the squirters. What is odd is the date on the casting, it shows "96 03 28" but I thought this engine was phased out in 1993. Ahead of the rebuild, does anyone know any differences I should be aware of with a 1996 engine?

B230FT is exactly the same as the B230FK. The only difference is the turbo actuator. It wasn't phased out in 93 as the B230FT was used in the 940 sports edition which was produced around 95/96. Most of the later 940 turbos after 96 were B230FK but I think they still put FT's in cars right up to 1998

I think the B230FT was available right up until 1998. The B230FK was almost the same engine and certainly was.

There’s a fairly comprehensive database of Volvo engines here:

https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/history...nes_search.php

And a descriptive article on the Redblock here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Redblock_Engine

Remember the 940 was discontinued earlier in the US. A lot of online information may be US-centric.

The post '96 940s were only sold with turbo engines B230FT and B230FK with the only mechanical difference being the turbo wasetgate actuator allowed higher boost in the FT ~7psi vs ~3.5psi in the FK.
The main upgrade internally was in 1994 I think, when stronger connecting rods and piston oil squirters were fitted.
In 1997 the EGR system was deleted as a better catalytic converter negated the need.

Mine is a 96 and I deleted the EGR system, it still passed emissions so perhaps they realised it wasn't needed. A testament to how good quality the CAT is and why it's worth so much money...
