Default P1800 The worse noise on earth.

I know this is probably a stab in the dark but does anyone have an idea what this could be? While driving my P1800s as I went up hill I suddenly heard a noise from beneath the car that is best described as twisted metal. I suppose it was a combination of twisted metal, someone, or if it helps with the visualisation at all, lets say a tall leggy blonde scraping her long finger nails down a blackboard and the engine of a Vulcan bomber flying overhead. If you’ve heard the last one you probably know what I mean! It lasted for about 5 seconds then stopped as I carried on my journey. Once back on the drive with the car stationery, gear stick in neutral but the engine still running the same noise suddenly returned only this time it did not stop until I turned the engine off. I could then restart the car whilst still stationery on the drive and I did not hear the noise again. The car had a overhaul with the clutch plate be realigned but not needing to be replaced. The overdrive has been replaced having been rebuilt from parts from two other units. Since this work was completed I have covered about 40 miles.

Anyone care to have a guess at what the problem may be, so I can investigate further?

Alternator bearing? Look forward to finding what this is.

So will I!
Mitch1971 - The car has a dynamo fitted so would that rule out any bearings in that area?

Remove the belt and give the dynamo a spin, also check water pump.

I'm inclined to agree with 940_Turbo, release bearing? Next time it does it, push the clutch pedal down, if the noise reduces or disappears, there's your culprit.

I have an MGB that has the same problem from time to time.

Good Luck,

Paul

did you do the work on the gearbox, clutch and overdrive yourself or someone else?
Interested why the clutch needed realigning, was there an issue? who made the assesment the clutch was OK; was it a garage?
I work on the old adage check what was last touched. Its sounds like clutch area and release bearing, operating arm and possibly the clutch assembly itself.

The work to the gear box, clutch and overdrive were in fact done and assessed as being needed to be done by a Classic Volvo specialist, who let’s just say has been in the business for many, many years. I had minor, really minor, trouble trying to get the car in to reverse and in to first. But the gears would be selected fine and the car would run okay, it has been like this for a few years. It was only after mentioning this minor problem to the ‘expert’ that they informed me they would inspect the clutch and the overdrive. They informed me the clutch was okay but they had realigned it and that I was unlucky the overdrive had just gone and would need replacing, so the work was completed.

My view with the current noise problem, which as I said has arisen after clocking up about 40 miles on the car since the work was completed, is also that it was probably an area that had received recent attention now causing the new problem. I thought it was worth posting the problem here if only to see if people confirmed my suspicions by immediately recognising the problem I was trying to describe or if they identify it has probably being another area. In the meantime any other fault diagnosis tips would be most welcome. When I discover what it is I let you all know….

Just how do you re align a clutch? The cover sits on dowels or shouldered bolts. The only reason the driven plate is aligned is so the gearbox input shaft can be slipped into the spigot bearing. It has nothing to do with where is sits when the car is driven.

Like 940 says you only need to centre clutch so you can fit the gearbox so not sure what this realigning business is. Did they replace the release bearing when doing the clutch, if not why not? Can you even buy new overdrives or was it replaced with an exchange one? Do some diagnostics, get a big screwdriver and put it to your ear and have a listen to where the problem
is, surely you must have an idea where the noise is coming from?
