Not sure if the B18/20 was ever fitted with one, but the viscous coupling fan unit can sound very nasty when it fails and tends to be intermittent as you describe. This had me baffled on my old Spitfire for weeks! If you've got a fixed one then obviously discount all this.

I agree; and if the gearbox had been removed I would have asked the garage to replace the clutch plate and release bearing for good insurance and money saved down line.
Whats the cost-£20 for the plate and £15 for the bearing?. Labour hours saved next time, 4 at £40/hour??

Good idea
Remove the auxilary belt and run the engine.
This takes the alternator and waterpump out of cct and isolates the problem to the drive train.
A short burst down the road shouldnt see any damage due to the water pump not circulating the water

I was hoping to post a video of the car with the same noise I had. But sods law (actually I am not moaning at the moment) I cannot replicate the noise. Run the car this morning been all over it checking everything. Only thing I thought was a bit odd was that it needed a litre of water/coolant to make sure the radiator was topped up okay. Found a very small spanner resting on the top of the engine compartment near to break / clutch master cylinders

Only thing that sounded similar and believe me it was so so so quiet, it could have just been my imagination playing tricks with me, is when I had my foot fully pressed down on the clutch pedal. But to be honest I am not sure that was it again at all. It was practically impossible to hear and I would prefer to discount it.

When I heard the original noise it was so loud, it I could hear it above the engine when sat in the car and driving it. I would say it was more likely to be coming from beneath the car near to the engine bay. But don’t be fooled that this is definitely the location, it is really difficult to pinpoint, especially as I have not heard it again since it first occurred.

The work done to the car by the Volvo specialist, I was informed by them was, as I said to realign the clutch (whatever the heck that meant) nothing else was replaced here. The overdrive unit was replaced. My one apparently was beyond repair so they replaced it by cannibalising parts from two separate units. (Again whatever the heck they mean)

Not removed the auxiliary belt yet. Waiting to see if the noise returns.
