Car is a 1999 V40 1.8 non GDI. Car would start ok but run rough and then rev between 1000 and 3500 revs with out me touching it. As soon as it was up to normal op temp, i reset the codes and it ran and idled fine. It threw up 2 codes for the cam and crank sensors. Replaced both but still doing the same and still the same codes. Has anybody got any ideas please.

Checked and cleaned. Problem is when the engine is cold as runs perfectly when up to temperature.

So decided to check crank sensor and took out first bolt and then the second bolt decides to go on a journey. To the bottom og the clutch. So it begins. 6 and a half hours later and gear box out / in and all rebuilt and engine running. But still the same fault. MiL comes on just after start up but cancel it when warmed up and it is perfect. So far replaced cam and crank sensors, cleaned MAF checked all hoses for air leaks. Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi Gazzer83,
Have you checked inlet manifold gasket ot injector O'rings? I've had both of these fail which caused simular symptoms to yours. Mine did improve when up to temp but was n't perfect. |

Latest update.
Checked for leaks on everything. No leaks of fuel or air. Now running ok but suspect that the MAF is duff, even though i have cleaned it. It is throwing of some spiking in its output. New one ordered. If that dosent work, then new temp sensor. I cant complain about the cost as the car has cost me next to nothing to run for the last 19 months since i bought her.

Crank sensor and wiring and coolant sensor and wiring are all testable with a multimeter.
Don't replace sensors based on a fault code. Test them. If you really did have a knackered crank sensor, you probably wouldn't have a running engine because your ECU wouldn't know your piston positions in order to fire correctly. Sounds more like an idle control valve problem. Do you have one on your engine?

When you checked your codes - What did you use? Can it actually read all the Volvo codes properly? A MAF fault will provide a MAF error. Have you a DICE to get the codes read?
