Rear axle torque rod bolt
The bolt securing the lower torque rod to the rear axle has sheared on my 89 745 GLE, about flush with the hole. I have a set of bolt extractors that you screw in after drilling (LH thread) but the bracket for the torque rod (welded to the axle tube) prevents getting the drill up to the sheared off stud. Any ideas would be welcome to solve this.

RE: Rear axle torque rod bolt
The fixing is by way of a bolt that is inserted through a flange (not bracket) and a bushing into a threaded hole on the differential housing. Because of the flange you will have to approach it from the broken off bolt head. You should be able to access the bolt body through the flange hole and bushing. You may have to jack the bottom of the torque rod to align the holes (probably due to bush tension). A good time to replace any suspension bushings that need renewing.
All the best, Peter |

RE: Rear axle torque rod bolt
Thanks but I must not have been clear in my post. The bolt has sheared off flush with the threaded hole itself, on the diff housing. I've actually removed the torque rod so am now left with a sheared off stud in the threaded hole. BTW I didn't shear it, it was discovered at recent MOT.

Bill.
I`ve just had a look at my 700 and you really have no option but to drill in the direction shown in the pic below. You will need a long series drill bit, or, as an alternative, cut off the bracket and weld it back on when you`re done. http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL188/...8/37138121.jpg One other possibility is to get a grip with vice grips on the bolt threads showing through the boss (see below) to get it moving, then grind off the bit you mangled with the grips and unscrew it from the bracket side. http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL188/...8/37138098.jpg Whatever you do, don`t use an eze-out, when, not if, you snap one of these off, the axle is effectively scrap as you won`t be able to drill through the broken bit. Good luck, Colin. |

RE: Rear axle torque rod bolt
Colin, your reply with superb illustrations is much appreciated. I've also noted your Brickboard reply. I came to the same conclusion about needing a long drill bit - if I can get one. I didn't actually shear the bolt, it was discovered recently. Ihere isn't enough "meat" to grab the bolt from the boss side. I'll try heat and drilling - hopefully that will loosen it. Thanks again.
