I'm not sure if V-Power is all that special but what I have noticed is that regular Shell does not seem to deliver the way it used to - I'm taking about compared with 2 or 3 years ago. I wonder if the regular mix has been made a little worse to make the improvement to V-Power more impressive. This would be a sensible marketing ploy by Shell as most V-Power users seem to be Shell customers already.

I ran 600 miles to Scotland and back at New Year and the car got 35mpg average on the way up on Sainsbury's regular diesel and 33 on the way back on Shell regular. (conditions/speed/wind direction/etc the same both ways).

In the past my cars have always been better on Shell but now I'm a firm fan of the Sainsbury's blend in the XC90. I believe it's supplied by BP.

Horses for courses, fuel types generally speaking, although I do believe that with some brands MPG results are better than another.

Met another XC90 owner tonight in the Shell Station, I'm filling up with V-Power Diesel and he is at the pump behind filling up with Regular Diesel, "Does that stuff work ?" he asked, well yes, I'm averaging 33.7mpg right now and he then tells me he is getting 26mpg in his much newer XC.

Oh yeah

We tend to get 33-35 on the long journeys up and down the motorways with supermarket fuel. When it's just local journeys then it goes down to anything from 27-31ish. Can't currently justify the premium on the high-performance fuels. The guy getting only 26mpg - what kind of journeys is he doing?

Not an XC90 but an XC60 (which is just as poor on fuel!)

Morrisons........31 MPG...........Excellium....... ..35MPG.............Shell Regular.........35 MPG

Well that's a question, all I know is I live in a rural location and do a very fair mix of Rural, Motorway & City driving.

I do believe all these MPG figures are down to how one uses a car and in essence are not really comparable.

I have recently filled up a classic s40 1.6 petrol which has done 11mpg

Yes 11mpg..Why..??

The s40 is parked up most of the time and rarely used and as a precaution is sometimes simply started to charge the battery and to keep the engine "oiled"

Over 100 miles registered it used half a tank or so which is £52 worth of fuel!!

Not a true showing of what it really should do MPG wise!

just my 2p worth.

Only had a our D5 58 sport for a few weeks, its used mainly around town in this time and we're getting average 27 mpg over this time. That is my calculation not the on board computer!
However we've done a few runs of A and M roads its roughly 34 mpg (again my calculation, I dont (and never fully) trust the on board computer.

Used only Shell V power so far (always used it so creature of habit!), mainly for its cleaning additives and potential to keep the DPF cleaner for longer.

I'd be happy with 26mpg at the moment I can't get my55 185bhp geartronic any higher than 20mpg. Last half a tank was vpower and will prob stick to it as being a petrol buff(diesel) and like the fact my engine runs smoother and cleaner. But 20mpg is puzzling me a little no matter where the diesel comes from, first few weeks was esso. Had a run from Glasgow to East Kilbride last week and still no improvement which I thought I would have seen having only done city driving the last few weeks since I got my xc90, 20.2mpg.

TBH gts2811, I dont think a 10-12 mile run will show you much improvement in the fuel consumption, you really need a several hundred mile run .... take a trip to St Andrews for the day ... I usually get 33+ on that run!

Hope it helps
