Default Advice please

Hi
I was wondering if someone might be able to suggest the best way forward for me..
The tracs/abs lights were intermittently illuminated on the dash of my 850r, so I decided to send the unit of for resoldering - I refitted the repaired item yesterday. During the few days that the car was used without the module, and also now it's back on the car, I've noticed the engine management light is on. Would there be a simple explanation for this? I dont have any diagnostic tools so running checks on fault codes isnt really an option at this stage..I was made redundant recently so visiting main dealers also isn't currently justifiable. I obviously dont want to risk damaging anything so I'm keen to fix something that might be wrong, but cost is something of a factor right now.

Cheers

Have you tried clearing all the fault codes? you need a 12V LED, some wire, and a push-to-close button to make the code reader.

What car are you talking about?
From MY99 the ABS Unit is connected wia CAN-BUS to the engine management and this can trigger the MIL.

Ok scratch that, saw it's about an 850
Read the codes as Tension sugested. Normally it should not bring up the MIL the ECU is not connected to the ABS.

The car is a '96 850r
If it makes any difference, I can see OBDII written just above the coin holder

You could also try the "barbaric" way of clearing the errors : take off both battery leads and hold them together for a couple of seconds (without touching the battery!!)

This will clear all errors and also reset the motor ECU.

Alternative: take out the motor ECU for a short period of time (clears only ECU errors and resets it to factory defaults)

This has the downside that you will not know which errors are now stored...

Sorry I am typing this from my mobile so cant link to the info. A quick search on Google should give you all the info you need though.

A 12volt LED costs about 30p at Maplins, a push switch about 2 quid.

Thanks-I'm going to hold off and see if I can do it a slightly less 'aggressive' way first
Cheers

Thanks for the link. If I can put one of these together, can you explain what I'd do with it then? Would I just put it in the OBDII slot somehow?
