Tyres - mixing different front to rears?
So i have used the 'national' tyres autogreen Super sport chaser SSC5 on my car, around £70 a corner and seem to be good enough, I only do around 10k a year and dont need high performance tyres for the heavy estate and the fronts are probably just over 2 years old and just shy of 20+k miles so plenty of use from a £70 tyre.
However checking again as i may need to replace the fronts due to the 2 edges on each tyre wearing quite a lot now (underinflated? but all set to Volvo pressure). The SSC5 doesnt appear to be available nowadays in the size (215/50 r17 95w). The question is, does using different tyres on the front and the rear make any difference with a heavy mid-range power estate? I would probably be looking to replace with either the Smart Caser SC1 or the All Season S2 for the fronts, (undecided anyone else her use these?) but they are different patterns to what i have on the rear.

Define different!
Different size, make, rating, structure? There is no reason why you cannot use Michelin on the front and Goodyear on the rear. As long as they are round and black. Tyres should be the same across the axle (but not necessarily the same make) of course.

If you change the tyre type (i.e. to all season or winter) you are strongly advised to do all four. If you ignore than and do only 2, put them on the rear.

I've got Michelin all seasons on the front and changed the rears when they were due, to goodyear all season on the rear without any issues.

ta, different make, not size.
will probably stick to the 'summer' tyre then, the volvo coped fine the other year when it snowed heavy and not really in somewhere that gets much snow apart form once or twice a year!
