Default 240 Glass, Runners & Rubbers Vs. 140 Glass, Runners & Rubber

Below is a few notes which my father made on the differences between 240 & 140 window glass, runners and rubbers for Simon at Brookhouse Volvo. He has asked me to post it here as an item of interest. I hope this is of help to someone.

VOLVO 140 & 240 WINDOW CHANNEL RUBBERS.

I set out below, as promised, the result of my investigation into the variations between 140 and 240 window channel rubbers.

Internal width of window channel (Volvo Pt. No. 675928) measured at base:- 9.88mm. (ie. space available for glass and rubber).

Thickness of window glass:-

140 (1971) - 5.02mm;

240 (1986) - 4.25mm;

Thickness of window channel rubber:-

140 - 2.93 – 3.00mm (used)*;

240 – 3.87 – 4.00mm (new).

(* measurement taken from uncompressed portion.)

From careful experimentation it is impossible, using a rubber mallet and reasonable force to fit 140 window glass into the window channel using 240 window channel rubber even with the addition of silicone lubricant. A few firm blows with a larger hammer might have done the trick but would risk smashing the glass or the channel biting into and tearing the rubber.

Using the 140 original rubber, silicone lubricant as before, it was relatively easy to tap the channel and rubber onto the window glass.

(Note:- the rear window channel and glass are common to both the 144 saloon and 245 estate and are interchangeable between the two models although as will be seen from the above dimensions the 240 glass is approximately .75mm thinner).

I hope this information is of assistance to you.
