The geartronic will always be more thirsty than manual but should be reduced by a single figure precentage not as much as you're seeing.

as a nation we seem to think low miles is better when buying a car.
I tend to disagree and would rather buy a car thats been looked after but has been driven. I have a low miles Golf GTi anniversary (PD) which was only driven now and then by the guy i got it off and that further cements my thoughts. Had loads of daft niggles since i bought it. Was 10 years old and only covered 65k ! also, My mate has a 520d Tourer which his mrs used for a week to do a 1 miles run to work during the cold spell. He now has DPF problems and a raised oil level (fuel in oil) as a result

I usually take the D5 on long journey's as much as i can. Took it for a test drive today, 25 litres of Shell fuel, and millers additive. MPG went up by 22, that's still pretty bad, no success after all that driving on the motorway today.
I think the engine and turbo hasn't opened up yet, due to low miles. I will need to keep on driving till the turbo and engine open's up, only then the mpg will go up. |

No amount of fuel additive is going to cure your problem.
Is your oil level rising? Have you checked around the injectors for fuel leak? Are you going by the trip computer for your mpg figures? If so it might be an idea to fill the tank and reset your odometer and fill it back up after you have covered 50 miles. Then work out how much this 50 miles has cost you and see how many litres of fuel it has used, then convert it into miles per gallon. Just a thought, but it may even be your info centre reading wrong. |

Just a thought but have you considered low consumption could be due to binding brakes?
Do you have any signs of this - discs hot after a run (but without having done hard braking), pulling to one side etc...etc...?

Brake pads, and discs were changed by the previous owner last month. There's no sign of fuel leak, and the oil level is fine. The car has been serviced, oil and oil filter, inc cambelt all done last month.
Don't know if tyres are causing the problem. As the front's are illegal and off the legal limit, also the rear tyres are the wrong size as they should be 225/45/18 not 225/40/18. Fuel wise, 25 litres which showed 265 miles, after 14.9 miles of driving the tank showed 250 miles of fuel left, mpg showing 22.0 mpg. Going to change tyres asap! |
