Good point. I try not to get in this situation, but living 'miles from anywhere' this occasionally happens, hence the can. I'm also wise to the need to carry a 10L can, not a 5L can. I used a 5L can once in my V50 and it had no effect because the tank needed more just to get the fuel pump recirculating.

On my XC60 I always brim it, only because I do a lot of miles and usually run it right down to gain as much range as poss.
From first click at the pump, I can often get an extra 6.5 litres to brim. Regularly put in 75 litres before the -- comes on. Have done up to 10miles in an emergency with the -- showing, so no real idea how far I could have gone before it died.

What's the betting the new XC60 goes down the 'popular trend' of reducing the size of the tank. The F-Pace is only 60 litres. Yes, it cuts down fully laden weight and adds a further tweak in the economy stakes, but I consider this a retrograde step. Some VAG cars have the option for a larger fuel tank. Sensible. I read a report some weeks back on the Disco Sport. A small fuel tank and relatively poor economy resulted in filling the tank every 350 miles or so. Pathetic. That's half my current distance.

You can go at least 30 miles past the -- on the trip computer, including a stop and engine restart. Unpleasant whining noise from fuel pump though!

As RoyMcDonald says, this is not advisable. I ran out of fuel in my V50 twice. Thankfully no damage was done. The 'getting desperate' message on the V50 was 'reduced engine performance'. This happens when the fuel supply is in the process of giving up.

Mrs S used to work in a garage, a ford one, and the pumps were checked regularly for accuracy, but when you keep clicking on and off, trying to get a bit more in, some of it is air, so as she used to tell me "you're pumping air not fuel". Touch wood, haven't run out of fuel but try to keep a certain amount in, another nag from Mrs S, telling me it's not good for a diesel as it has to be reprimed whatever that means!
