I would try a D5 Diesel before you decide to go for a petrol , it is surprisingly likeable and the fuel bills will be half ...

If you decide to go for petrol especially, go for after 2002 to avoid problems that can occur best of luck

I would go for a D5. I had a petrol V70 and now a D5 S60 and find the economy and performance balance a great act and would be very difficult to beat.

I have the 2.9 (non-Turbo) and it is superb. The performance is fine and the consumption isn't too bad if driven sensibly.

If you really want a petrol engine then I would be looking at two alternatives:

* 2.4 non-turbo 170 bhp
* 2.4T /2.5T (depending on age)

Go for the 2.4 non-turbo if performance isn't top criteria, as that is not too slow anyway , although try and avoid detuned 2.4 140bhp cars, especially if you want an auto.
The 2.4/2.5 T is plenty quick enough for all but the most demanding of drivers, who would probably not be looking at S80s anyway...

Engines I would avoid:

* 2.9 non-turbo
* 2.8 T6 / 2.9 T6 (again, depending on age)

The straight six makes a beautiful sound but that's about it IMO. The non-turbo 2.9 is not quick at all and the T6 isn't as quick as you might think, quite a few issues with some of them too. Both are far too thirsty unless you do very few miles or have very deep pockets.
Most people seem to prefer having an S60 T5 to an S80 T6, and there are several good reasons for that.

Personally I went for the D5 because it's just as quick (if not quicker) than the 2.4 petrol (I've owned both) and fuel economy is at least 10mpg better.

All IMHO, of course.

Just to fill in the blanks, here's the performance figures for the various engines (manual/auto):

2.0T - 8.8 / 9.5
2.4 (140) - 10.2 / 11.0
2.4 (170) - 8.7 / 9.6
2.4T - 7.6 / ?
2.5T - 7.1 / 7.5
2.9 - 7.9 / 8.6
T6 - NA / 7.0
2.5 TDI - 10.6 / 11.1
D5 - 9.5 / 9.9

If performance counts, then the 2.5T manual essentially as quick as a T6 and with the auto version very nearly as fast...

And fuel consumption in mpg (manual/auto):

2.0T - 31 / 28
2.4 (140) - 31 / 29
2.4 (170) - 31 / 29
2.4T - 30 / 27
2.5T - 30 / 28
2.9 - 27 / 26
T6 - NA / 25
2.5 TDI - 44 / 38
D5 - 43 / 36

For me, the 2.5T wipes the floor with the rest of the range as an all rounder. Or a tuned D5 if fuel economy is important?
