Default XC70 Alarm

Morning each,

My belovid XC70 looks like its been stuck down with the random alarm going off in the middle of the night.

I'm geussing as there is no messages in the DIM that the siren battery has gone west.

Does anyone know if the car would object if I removed the siren and ran the car for a few days without it while I pop the siren open to see if I can obtain a new battery or order new a siren if the circuit board has been damaged by the electrolyte.

Interestingly when I was standing out in the street in my underpants at 2.30 this morning the red led on the dash seemed to be flickering at high speed, might this indicate anything obvious couldn't find anything about it in the owners manual.

Oh, and the hazards were flashing so guessing a duff siren battery would trigger a full alarm and not just sound the siren.

Might look fo a cupboard now to catch up on some sleep.

Many thanks in advance.

OK, bit of un update,

located and pulled the siren fuse under the dash, now locking the car by the drivers lock only, been ok so far during the day, will pull the siren of tonight and break it open to see if salvageble.

When the siren fails does it course the indicators to flash as well?? It appears that it has a canbus link to it so guess its feasable.

If not I feel a visit to the stealer coming up.

I know the starter battery is nearing the end, but can't change this without removing the huge lpg tank, s0ds law I filled it up at the weekend. Will check the voltage before I leave work tonight.

Would I expect to see a message so similar in the DIM or radio after an alarm trigger to see what coused it or can only a connection to VADIS tell me this.

Does this sound like the usual way the siren dies???

Sorry for all the questions. Had a resonable seach on the forum but not much time during lunch break.

OK next instalment of the siren saga, took the offending unit off last night and split it open, battery as flat as the perverbial pan cake, one of the wires had pinged off the battery maybe when I opened the unit maybe while potholing around the steets of Sheffield.

The battery itself didn't look too bad but there is a spot of crud near the battery connector which apears to have burnt out the charging circuit, if I could see what the damaged component was I might stand a chance of replacing it. Me thinks its time to break out my flexiable freind and buy a new one.

I have only just noticed that this post has been made in the P3 forum (the link I provided above is for a P2 model siren). When people phone to place orders we do request the registration number in order to identify the correct parts, but my above post could be misleading to others so it is worth pointing out.

Yes sorry about that, I think in my bleary eyed state I chose the wrong forum.

I did think about getting a siren from a breakers and adding the battery pack in a seperate box but figured as my car is quite a late P2 model even if i bought the newest siren I could get it might be in a similar state, so in the end I bit the bullet and have a new one winging its way from Rufe.

On the plus side I have deemed a few nuggets of usefull information that might help others in the same situation. I did take the siren out the following evening to garrentee some sleep and stop any ear wigging from her indoors, this was very easy to do, it took about half an hour, the trickiest bit was peeling back the plastic wheel arch liner as it tucks under the outer wheel arch moulding. To remove the domed security bolt that holds the siren in place I simply drilled a dimple in it so I could knok it round with the corner of a cold chisel then while pushing against the siren bracket to remove the tension just unscrewed it with my fingures.

The plug comes out easily with the aid of a pair of slip joint pliers.

The car seems quite happy to be without the siren for a few days, I just get a 'alarm service required' warning when I turn the ignition on.

The fuse for the siren in an '05 XC70 is under the dash and not in the side of the dash, took ages to find this, the black plastic trim above the pedels has to be unscrewed and removed then I think it was fuse number 8 I removed to stop the faulty battery discharging the main battery at least until I removed the siren.

The car can be locked using the key which does not activate the alarm which is a huge bonus although if the siren has been damaged there is no garrentee it will not still go off. The car can still be opened withthe remote.

To open the siren I removed ot from its steel cradle then lightly clamping it in a vice ran a hacksaw around the joint between the grey and black mouldingings, very easy indeed, I was going to glue the two halves back together using Araldite and a hiar drier to make it flow but obviously no point now.

And finaly it seems that a faulty alarm will set off the indicators as there is a data link between the siren and its controlling module so the siren probably reports some sort of 'tamper' signal as if someone is trying to remove its internal battery, interestingly there were no messages reported in the morning when I turned the ignition on.

Hopefully the above info will come in handy for anyone else in a similar situation, not sure how relevent it is to a P3 model, if I can figure out how I might put a link to it in the correct P2 forum.
