I was parked next to a plod spec (North Yorkshire) Vauxhall Antara yesterday and it was shod with very new looking Goodyear Ultragrip winter tyres.

(A lot of winter tyres start with 9mm-10mm of tread rather than 8mm on summer tyres).
So had the tyre pressire light this week.... I decided to take the time to remove and rotate the tyres and check them over, and when measured properly they were all circa 3.6mm -> 4.8mm depth. At nearly 40k miles I've had my monies worth so decided to replace all four. I wanted to go with Cooper Discoverer Winter again as I've been very pleased with them but everything is hard to get at the moment.

Found these on e-bay - bought a set of four : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283897973...703c%7Ciid%3A1

Seller has good feedback, price was the best in the marketplace by far - £80 cheaper than the nearest price on a set of four taking delivery into account - they were £360 for four with next day delivery.

Arrived today, within 24 hours, all good condition and not desperately old stock... (the tyres pictured were 2017, mine where week 49 2019).

So if you have an XC60 or XC90 with 235 60 R18's on them - these are a very good, excellent value winter option (I run them all year round with no issues - I got 40k out of my last set which debunks the myth that winter tyres wear rapidly in summer).

Ideal if you have a cheap local fitter but at £20 a corner fitting balancing disposal etc puts a dent in the savings.

40k is good if I get that out of my cross climates car will be on 100k this winter and next should be fine the 3rd will depend on my mileage the next few years which may well stay low…

There's a local company that will fit & balance them for £15 a corner and dispose of the old carcass.

I don't drive like Miss Daisy but I'm not a nutter either - I've typically got 40-44k out of a set of tyres on my Mk1 XC90, 2015 XC60 AWD and 2017 XC60 FWD - I do rotate them every 10-12k. That's with the non R-Design 235 60 R18 spec tyres, usually Cooper Discoverer or Pirelli Scorpion.

Fitting seems to have gone up sharply later - most places are now charging £20 a corner. I eventually managed to get it done for £10/corner - cheaper than the £12 (£10 + VAT) I used to pay (and had done for years).

Confusingly, one place wanted to charge £45 for fitting (one axle) and tracking - seemed cheap. When I told them I need to fit new wishbones, so there isn't much point in having it tracked, and how much was fitting only, somehow that was £47. They ought to be in the car insurance business...!

cheers

James

It's Nokians and yes they are very good.WR SUV with heavy load rating. The Pirelli Scorpians were a poor tyre in my experience, not much wet grip and prone to tramline. Have done four seasons on my Nokians so far. Avon summer tyres are surprisingly good too, go for 135x55xR16 they handle really well and dont rub the wheel arches.

You had a second set of wheels swapped over onto your car, or had they swap tyres onto a single set of wheels? If the latter....that's a very good price!

cheers

James

Last year I went to National Tyre Services to ask to change my wheels around, they refused unless I pay for re-balancing, which they said was company policy as the tyres and wheels would be in different places. I argued that that would not change the balance of a wheel just by changing its location on the car. They where adamant, ( they had the gear) but so was i and walked out, bought a secondhand windy gun, do my own now.

Swapped wheels with winter tyres on. Summer wheels in hibernation now.
