As a note....
The 740/760780 Turbo Diesel is a 6 cyl, 2.8 (as mentioned), had 122 bhp and was the fastest production diesel car in the world when it came out.
Of course , I was talking about the 700/900 series , as they were the subject of the topic ..
..

The 760 V6 Auto was one of the fastest accelerating cars in the world from 30 - 50 mph .. 2.9 seconds compare that to lots of exotic cars , quicker than the V12 Jag ..

Certainly heard (literally!) and smelled the old 240 D6 cars..... never heard of a 5 cyl diesel 240.

So perhaps the 900 TD with the 5 cylinder in seen by Jor and the 7/9 TD with the 5 cylinder in seen by my mechanic had their engines taken from 2 series that ended up in the UK?

The 2.4l D24 first debuted in the 240 D6 in 1979 in NA form only, later in '79 a 5 pot version was released primarily in Finland for the taxi market. It was a 2.0litre to get around their tax laws (like Italy and the British company car tax rules) and was badged D5!

Ok, after some digging looks like a 5 cyl diesel engine (non turbo) was offered in some markets and had 69 bhp. The D6 had a whopping (!) 89 bhp.
